It’s a lot harder to give your horse a bath in the winter, but their long winter coats hold plenty of dirt, and can still get some really nasty stains. Just using a towel and water helps, but isn’t quite enough to get through tough stains.

I have used a number of waterless shampoos, but my favorite is Greenspot Remover by Cowboy Magic. This product was actually a lifesaver when I used to work at barns where I prepared horses for shows. If a horse had laid in his stall overnight and gotten a nice big poop stain on his leg or side, the cowboy magic would take it right off. It was also great for cleaning up hocks on the grey horses that even after a bath, still had a yellowish hue to their hocks.

Now I use it mostly in the winter to remove stains or to clean up the whole horse. Just moisten a towel with water, spray some of the Cowboy Magic over the towel, and scrub away. This is also a great trick for sweat marks under the saddle. You get a cleaner horse but you can avoid the routine of bathing the horse, putting coolers on, and waiting for him to dry so you can put his regular blanket back on.
When I went on Cowboy Magic’s website, I saw that they are recommending the Greenspot remover for people! “…Greenspot remover is great for campers and mountain bikers who want to clean up dirty, smelly bodies without using lots of water. The only water needed is to wet the towel to activate the ingredients that break down the sweat or dirt. Follow up with a dry towel to remove the sweat or dirt.” It does smell pretty good, so this may be worth a try…

When I did a search for the product on Amazon, I noticed that some people are using it on dogs as well, never thought of that either, but watch out Freida!

It looks like I now have more uses for my Cowboy Magic Greenspot Remover than when I started writing this article! Has anyone else used Cowboy Magic on their horse… or themselves? Do you have any other waterless shampoos to recommend?

p.s. I don’t know how the link below is so cheap, but even with the shipping this is a good deal!
